Why Do People Crave Curry? (And Is It OK To Be Addicted?)

Have you ever experienced a powerful craving for curry? Well don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Eating a delicious curry is such a pleasurable experience that most of us will end up with a level of addiction.

What makes curry addictive?

To figure out why we get addicted to Indian curries we need to take a look at an ingredient called capsaicin. Capsaicin is the “hot” ingredient of chili’s, capsicums and red peppers.

Why so many people get addicted to, and enjoy the burn of a curry, comes down to simple biology.

The brain receives signals about being “burned”. This causes chemicals to release into the brain and create a type of euphoria.

What about MSG, does that make curry more addictive?

The debate continues about the dangers of MSG. MSG has addictive qualities according to this MD.

Not all curry houses use MSG in their dishes. Of course some do. If you have any doubts about whether your local curry restaurant uses MSG, the best thing to do is just to ask.
